Croydon and District Masonic Hall was originally built as a Church, however it's construction was delayed by the Second World War. In fact during the war it was used as a food store, and specifically used to store jars of Bovril.
Following the Second World War there wasn't need for another Church in Croydon, so new owners were sought and a Committee of Freemasons decided to purchase the building to form a permanent home for Freemasonry in Croydon.
Freemasonry means different things to each of those who joins. For some, it's about making new friends and acquaintances. For others it's about being able to help deserving causes - making a contribution to family and society. But for most, it is an enjoyable hobby.
Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies.
