Geocache Description:

This small-size cache is hidden in Meijijingu Gaien. Please come visit and learn about the history of this complex.

English 英語

In the Edo Period, the land on which Meijijingu Gaien sits was owned by Aoyama Tokiwanosuke Tadanari, who was a magistrate for the city of Edo and an important figure in the early days of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1868). Most of Aoyama’s land became what is now Aoyama Cemetery, but the rest became, in 1889, The Aoyama Military Training Ground.

Stationed at the Aoyama Military Training Ground were some of the most decorated (and infamous) brigades: The Japanese Imperial Guard and the First Division of the Japanese Imperial Army. Military parades were held here, and many solders were sent off from this place to fight in the Sino-Japanese War (1894-5) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5). The funeral ceremony for the Meiji Emperor was held here and, two years later in 1914, this military facility was rebuilt into the Meijijingu Gaien.

Meijijingu Gaien (which means "annex garden of the Meiji Shrine") has many facilities. The centerpiece is the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, which exhibits pictures from the life of the Meiji Emperor. The Meiji Memorial Hall, which was once called the Constitution Memorial Hall, is known as a place for wedding receptions.

But most people visit here because of sports.

The Jingu Baseball Stadium is the home of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows and it also has a long history with college and high school baseball. During the US-led occupation of Japan after World War II, the Allied Powers used this stadium (the "GHQ" in the photo stands for "General Headquarters" of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers).

Aside from baseball, there is also an ice skate rink, a futsal court, tennis courts, golf range, batting dome, among others. Close by there are the National Stadium, Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Although they are not officially part of the Jingu Gaien, these facilities make up the largest sports complex in central Tokyo. The poster below is for a multi sports meet held here.

There is also a small theme park for young children, a ginkgo tree promenade that is a sight to see in autumn colors, and a big fireworks event in the summer.

Please come visit!

Japanese
