At the northern peak of Kilmarnock the Craigspout Waterfall cascades into the Fenwick Water, almost inaccessible and hidden from view. The waterfall is formed from the drainage from the fields at the north and is at a very secluded area even though it's close to the main road. The Fenwick Water flows south east originating from the various lochs, dams and reservoirs near the Whitlee Wind Farm, eventually meeting the Craufurdland Water at the Dean Park.
The cache area is tricky to access, hence the high terrain value. It is well worth the effort though as this is a fantastic secluded area with amazing geographic features.
There are 2 methods of reaching the cache -
Method 1 -
Park at N55 38.370 W004 28.455 and follow the pavement in a north westerly direction towards the waypoint. You may be able to hear the waterfall from the pavement but you can't access it from here due to the vertical cliff. Cross both the carriageways and enter the woods. Follow the fence and you should come to a section at N55 38.417 W004 28.172 which has collapsed allowing you safe passage into the next section of the woods.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN THIS AREA AS IT IS VERY SLIPPY WITH A STEEP BANK.
You should see a wooden fence leading down to the river. This section of the river comes out of a tunnel under the bypass at N55 38.384 W004 28.150. Make your way to the other side of the river by climbing over the wooden fence. Fight your way through some gorse and you will now be in an open field. When laying this cache there were around 100 sheep (or should that be shuggles?) in the field so this area may not be suitable for dogs. A short distance downstream is the remains of a stone structure as per the photo. Follow the river downstream to the waterfall and cache area.
Method 2 -
Park at Borland Bridge at N55 38.015 W004 28.450. Cross the burn adjacent to the parking space and enter the field at N55 38.019 W004 28.450. Follow the river upstream, under the fallen log at N55 38.134 W004 28.424 and across the gate at N55 38.164 W004 28.370 (please note that this field is used for grazing sheep). Turn left and follow the fence around the edge of the field until you reach the corner. Cross the fence into the field and the waterfall should be in view.
While you're in this area why not look for a nearby cache - Borland Hike GC58CXX
The litter near the cache was there prior to my arrival. Unfortunately I didn't have any bags to tidy it up.
I had problems getting an accurate coordinate due to the vertical cliff and trees however you shouldn't need it if you use the hint. When placing the cache my GPS was accurate to 10 feet.
The cache is a small square lockable tupperware container containing some small swap items.
