Names of Atlanta: Terminus Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

SpokesATL: Unfortunately, the Zero Mile Post has moved several miles from the place it was historically marking. Maybe one day it will make sense to have a geocache at this location again, but I'm archiving it for now.

Geocache Description:

This cache series features some of Atlanta's former names and the history related to those names. This specific cache is for Terminus, an early name for Atlanta. Beginning around 1837, Atlanta was briefly known as Terminus because it was the end of a railroad from Chattanooga that would later be linked to Savannah.

As the railroad was constructed, a zero milepost marker was placed at the end of the rail line. On one side, the marker says

W & A
R R
0 0

for its placement zero miles from the end of the line. And on the other side is inscribed

W & A
R R
138

for the distance of 138 miles to Chattanooga.

This mile post still exists, however it is in a building that is no longer in use and generally closed to the public. The links below provide more information about the milepost. The cache is located outside this building. Coordinates are approximate due to the GPS signal issues here. The waypoints and hint should prove useful in accessing the cache.
