Het standbeeld, welke op 1950 is geplaatst, heeft op meerdere plekken gestaan. Na vertrek van het SMN in 1969 verhuisde het beeld mee naar de Vlothaven en kreeg daar een onopvallende plaats tussen gebouwen. Oud-medewerkers namen uiteindelijk het initiatief tot verplaatsing en vanaf 1988 keek de zeeman weer over het IJ, nu vanaf een stek bij het Centraal Station op de De Ruyterkade.
Na de herinrichting van het Java-eiland is het standbeeld teruggekeerd op de Kop. De Zeeman op de uitkijk werd op 4 mei 2003 opnieuw onthuld tijdens een herdenking van de slachtoffers van de tweede wereldoorlog

De maker van het standbeeld: Pieter Starreveld (1911 – 1989)
Starrenveld heeft een aantal oorlogsmonumenten op zijn naam staan. Dit naoorlogse beeld past door de blokvormige opbouw nog in de traditie van de vooroorlogse beeldhouwkunst. De beeldhouwer is verder vooral bekend om zijn figuratieve dierfiguren.
Mijn connectie met het beeld
Ik woon in de buurt van het beeld en vind het soms fijn om 's-avonds een rondje te lopen en mijn gedachten op een rijtje te zetten. Ik kom dan vaak even langs dit beeld en neem even een pauze op een van de bankjes. De plek geeft mij een gevoel van stilte, terwijl je toch midden in een wereldstad bent.
The monument, which has been placed on it's current spot in 1950, has been moved several times into different neighborhoods. After the departure of SMN in 1969 the statue was moved to the "Vlothaven" and was put in a rather unnoticable spot in between buildings. Former employees initiated the move of the statue in 1988 to a spot near Central Station on "De Ruyterkade", looking out over "het IJ".
After the refurbishment of the Java island the statue returned to it's current place, at the head of the island. The Sailor on the lookout was releaved again on May 4th 2003 during the commemoration of the victims of the second World War.

The creator of the statue: Pieter Starreveld (1911 - 1989)
Starreveld has created a number of war monuments. This post-war statue still has the characteristics of pre-war sculptures, mainly because of it's block-like built. The sculpturer is generally known for his figurative animal sculptures.
My connection with the statue
I live closeby to this statue and usually pass it on one of my occasional night walks. To collect and process my thoughts of the day I take a short break on one of the benches and look out over the river. The spot gives me a feeling of silence and tranquility, while the location is near the center of a worldly capital.
Cruise ships
If you're lucky (especially in the summer) you might get a good angle on one of the huge cruise ships that occasionally moor at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam.
