Bestagno è circondato da fasce terrazzate in cui viene praticata la coltivazione degli ulivi o, talvolta, la viticultura.
In epoca medievale e rinascimentale, Bestagno, grazie alla sua posizione isolata ed elevata, costituì una risorsa importante per il controllo del territorio circostante da parte dei signorotti di turno. I suoi territori, così come quelli di Oneglia e di altri comuni limitrofi, essendo situati all'estremo ovest della Liguria, furono spesso contesi dalle potenze circostanti, la Repubblica di Genova, il Marchesato del Monferrato, il Regno dei Savoia, la vicina Francia.
Fu comune autonomo fino al 1928, quando fu inglobato in Pontedassio.

Bestagno is surrounded by terraced olive groves and vineyards on terraces.
During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Bestagno, due to its remoteness and high altitude, was a strategic location to control the surroundings and the territories of the lords of the moment. Due to its western location in Liguria, its territories, as well as those of Oneglia and other neighboring villages, were often disputed by surrounding powers: the Republic of Genoa, the March of Montferrat, the Kingdom of Savoy, and neighboring France.
It was an independent municipality until 1928, when it was incorporated with the town of Pontedassio.

Bestagno ist umringt von Olivenbäumen und Weinbergen.
Während des Mittelalters und der Renaissance war Bestagno für den jeweiligen Landesherren wegen seiner Abgeschiedenheit und der Höhenlage ein strategisch bedeutender Ort, um die unmittelbare Umgebung zu kontrollieren. Wegen seiner Lage im westlichen Ligurien war Bestagno genauso wie Oneglia und andere benachbarte Dörfer ständig von den umgebenden Regionalmächten wie der Republik Genua, der Markgrafschaft Montferrat, dem Haus Savoyen und dem benachbarten Frankreich umkämpft.
Bis zum Jahr 1928 war es eine selbständige Gemeinde und wurde dann zur Stadt Pontedassio eingemeindet.

Pendant le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance, Bestagno avait, du fait de son altitude, une position stratégique pour contrôler les environs et les territoires des seigneurs du moment. Confinée dans l’ouest de la Ligurie, ses territoires, ainsi que ceux d’Oneglia et des villages à proximité, furent souvent disputés par d’autres pouvoirs alentours : La République de Gênes, le marquisat du Montferrat, la Maison de Savoie, et la France toute voisine.
Bestagno fut une commune indépendante jusqu’en 1928, avant son incorporation avec la ville de Pontedassio.
