Geocache Description:

The coordinates for this cache are obtained from an interesting gravestone in the churchyard of Sancreed church.

Sancreed church

The parish church of Sancreed is dedicated to St Credan, although there is some doubt as to which St Credan as there were two or more Cornish Saints with this name. Some feel the dedication is to St Credan, a disciple of St Petrock, whose body, according to Leland rests in Bodmin; others feel it's to St Credan, son of Illadham, who subsequently returned to Ireland and settled in County Wicklow.

The circular configuration of the site together with the old crosses, suggests that the first church was probably monastic in character, but also that it was surrounded by a collection of huts or cells, housing a community of monks, manual workers and domestics.

The church comprises a chancel, nave, south aisle and north transept. The arcade consists of five four-centred arches supported on monolith granite pillars; the transept is separated from the nave by two similar arches sustained by a similar pillar. The inner half of the transept is used as a vestry. Entrances are a south porch, a north door and a vestry door; the original priest's door is blocked. The tower is a massive building of two stages and finished with battlements and pinnacles; it was probably designed in the first place for a spire. It was built of granite ashlar in large stones, the courses in the lower half being alternately deep and shallow. It contains three bells.

The font, is similar to that at St Ives and probably worked by the same mason. It is a cup-shaped bowl, two feet three inches in diameter. At the corners are four angels with crowns on their foreheads ,bearing shields. It stands on a round stem, with four engraved shafts. The richly engraved rood screen is also worth a look.

The churchyard contains five ancient crosses.

Also in the graveyard is the grave of Elizabeth Forbes and a memorial to Stanhope Forbes and his second wife. It's not clear to me whether all three are in the same grave.

The cache coordinates though, are those of another interesting grave.

You are looking for a rough granite headstone.
The person buried here was born September A 188B and died July CD 19EF.

The cache is hidden a short walk away at N50 06.ACG W0005 36.HJD
