Geocache Description:

The small village Gudvangen in the municipality of Aurland in Sogn og Fjordane county is located iat the  Nærøyfjord (or Nærøyfjorden).

The narrow fjord is a branch of the large Sognefjord. The 18-kilometre (11 mi) long fjord is only 500 metres (1,600 ft) wide in some parts. Since 2005, the Nærøyfjord has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has also been rated by the National Geographic Society as the world's number one natural heritage site.

Gudvangen is a popular tourist destination and is located at the end of the Nærøyfjord where the Nærøydalselvi river empties into the fjord. The highway E16 passes by the village. Heading southwest on the highway leads to Voss and Bergen  while heading northeast the E16 enters the Gudvanga Tunnel on its way to Flåm, Undredal, and eventually Oslo.

The name Gudvangen (Old Norse: Guðvangir) comes from the old farm name. The first element is gud meaning a "heathen god". The vang(en) word is still in use referring the open space in front of a place of worship like Aurlandsvangen and Vossevangen. In Gudvangen, there have been several places of worship since pre-Christian times.
