Geocache Description:

This cache is a tribute to Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first female Native American doctor.  While living in Bancroft, the white house you can see from here was where she lived with her husband and 2 sons.  It is a quick and easy park and grab.  The owners of this property have given permission for the cache to be placed here.

Susan La Flesche Picotte was the first Native American woman to receive a medical degree in the United States.   She was born in 1865 in northeastern Nebraska on the Omaha Reservation.  As a child she saw a sick Native American woman die because a white doctor refused to give the woman care.  It was this event that inspired her to train as a physician.  After receiving her medical degree in 1889 she completed her internship and returned to Nebraska.  She provided health care for about 1200 people for the government boarding school until she married Henry Picotte in 1894. They settled in Bancroft, Nebraska at the house where this geocache is located.  Susan and Henry had two sons.  While in Bancroft she set up a private practice where she provided medical care for people of all races.  After her husband died in 1905 of a terminal illness, Susan moved to Walthill, Nebraska.  In 1913 she opened a hospital in Walthill, which was named in her honor after she died in 1915. The hospital in Walthill now serves as a museum dedicated to her work and the history of the Omaha and Winnebago tribes.
