Geocache Description:

A wee exploration of the Castletown Heritage Trail, somewhere I used to love to go when I was younger. Growing up here, I was really proud of the heritage and enjoyed learning about it!

N 58  AB.C(D+1)E     W 003  EA.AFG

The co-ordinates above can be completed by visiting the Heritage Trail and finding the answers to the clues below. The Waypoints take you along the trail and to different information boards along the way. The final cache is not within the trail itself, so there is no need to search amongst the flagstones etc!

Cache placed with kind permission of Paul Castle, Countryside Ranger, Seadrift Visitor Centre, Dunnet and the acknowledgement of Jayne Blackburn, Castletown Heritage Society.

Waypoint 1:     N 58  35.868     W 003 23.182

  • A = What was the year that James Trail died?  184A

Waypoint 2:    N58 35.910  W 003 23.167

  • G = What is the most frequently used digit in the first paragraph on this board?
  • B = The number of schools that flagstone production helped to pay for.

Waypoint 3:  N 58  35.909    W003 23.135

  • C = How many different species of orchid grow in Caithness?
  • F = The duration, in years, of the war mentioned which led to the decline of the flagstone industry

Waypoint 4:  N58  35.913   W 003 23.099

  • D = The number of harbours Bremner built in the local area.
  • E = The number of people loading the flagstone onto the wood from the boat.

This is my most northerly cache so far, normally based around Aberdeen, so I'd also like to thank my parents [vintage spec] to agreeing to any maintenance required on this one. They will, of course, have to find it first to know where it is located!!!
