Christmas which means “Christ’s Mass”, is a christian celebration to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrated on December 25th each year. Not only do Christians celebrate this holiday, many countries with minority christian populations, have made this day into a national holiday.
The birth of Jesus Christ is believed to be between 7 and 2 BC, but the exact date of his birth is unknown. In the mid 4th century, the Western Christian Church placed Christmas on December 25, a date later adopted in the East. The exact reason why this date was chosen, is unclear, but may have to do with the Winter Solstice or other winter celebrations.
The original date of the celebration in the East, was January 6, in connection with Epiphany, and is still the date for the celebration in some churches.
Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift giving, Christmas music and caroling, christmas cards, church celebrations, decorations, lights and a special meal. In addition, there are several figures associated with Christmas, including Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas and Christkind, and are often thought of as being the same person. Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve spending a great deal of money, the holiday has become a real economic success for retailers and businesses.
