The design of the castle is strongly Scots influenced. Building was started in 1616 by Malcolm Hamilton, although a Maguire castle would have been based here prior to the Plantation.
The estate was occupied by Gustav Hamilton, the Govenor of Enniskillen who died in 1691. His wife and children continued to live at Monea but had to sell the estate in 1704 - a few years later the castle was gutted by fire and abandoned.
The cache itself is a bottle-top type container located close to the ruins.
During the summer, friendly horses can be found at the end of the lane running next to the castle walls.
