Geocache Description:

Mike Lake Trail

Golden Ears Provincial Park received its name from the twin peaks of Mt. Blanshard and their golden colour on certain sunsets.

Human activity in Golden Ears Park, both past and present, has been confined to the accessible Alouette Valley in the south of the park. Alouette Lake  and its forested surroundings were traditional hunting and fishing grounds for the Douglas-Lillooet and Katzie Coast Salish.

Most recently, the valley was the site of B.C.’s greatest railroad logging operations. In the 1920’s, dignitaries such Winston Churchill travelled long distances to view these “modern” logging techniques. By the 1930’s, most of the prime timber had been harvested and a 1931 fire in the valley permanently silenced the logging operations.

Signs of these logging operations can be seen throughout the park. The stumps of these old giants  are visible along the Mike Lake Trail.

There are many trails of various challenge levels within the park. Be prepared for the trails that you choose.

Wildlife is a part of the park, so be prepared for the recommended procedures should an encounter occur.

Mike Lake Trail starts at the main corral, at the entrance to the park, and ends at the Mike Lake Road. This 4.2 km trails is a horse, mountain biking and hiking trail with a 100 metre elevation change.

NOTE:
2014 - BC Hydro is working on the Right of Way and the Mike Lake Trail is currently divided into 2 sections while construction is in progress. The north portion can be accessed from Mike Lake Road. Parking at N 49 16.351 W 122 32.071 or  a short distance further along the road at Mike Lake.

Corral    N 49° 17.771 W 122° 30.712

Golden Ears Park’s forest cover can provide weak GPS signals. All coordinates were obtained on a dry day with 130 to 180 averaged points with accuracies from 6 to 10 metres.
The hints should help in locating the GZ. All caches are within reach or a step or two from the trail.

Be gentle with the vegetation, rehide for the next cacher and PLEASE no spoilers so the next cacher can enjoy the hunt.

Park gates are CLOSED at night. Take note of when they are open and close. BYOP
