Geocache Description:

The Ojo de Dios (Eye of God in Spanish) is woven with yarn and wood, often with several colors. The weaving of an Ojo de Dios is an ancient contemplative and spiritual practice for many indigenous peoples in the Americas, and beliefs surrounding them vary with location and history. Ojos de Dios have traditionally been created for celebration or blessing, presented as a gift or designed to bless a home. Often they reflect a confidence in all-seeing Providence. The spiritual eye has the power to see and understand things unknown to the physical eye. Traditional Ojos de Dios are frequently woven in solitude, as part of an extended meditation or prayer. In other settings, their construction is one aspect of longstanding communal engagement and connection.

Geocachers are encouraged to make their own Ojo de Dios and add them to the geozone!

This cache is located at the top of a lookout trail that forks off of the main spirit lake path. It is a nice little spot that few people go to because it is not part of the main trail system at Spirit Lake. To find the start of this small rough trail, head down the main Spirit Lake path from the parking lot and continue through the forest along the creek, over the first wooden bridge, up the hill and look for signs of what looks like deer trails (but is actually this secret trail) off to the right. There is a big log on the right side of the trail with a green trail marker on it, and if you look near there you will find your trail. The trail will branch off on the right side of the main trail right before the second wooden bridge. This turn off is quite early in the Spirit Lake trail system and is before any of the other main forks in the path.

It is a narrow, muddy, well-marked and moderately difficult trail. There are cut out steps in logs for you to walk over and ropes to help you climb up steep parts of the hill. It is a beautiful hike and well worth the sweat.

When you are nearing the top, there will be a small clearing that sort of looks like a nice lookout but it's just a preview. Keep going a bit farther for the real lookout. Once you get to the top, you will find a nice little clearing on the edge of the hill with a couple stumps you may use as a resting seat.

Unless you are 8' tall or can climb like a monkey, this one will require some teamwork.

There is a large parking lot at the entrance to the Spirit Lake Trail system. This is located across from the George Brown Recreation Centre in Skidegate right before the gas station if you are coming from Charlotte.
