At one time the island of Alameda was not an island at all. It was a peninsula that was connected to Oakland from before the Park Street Bridge all the way to San Leandro Bay.
The Army Corp of Engineers directed the excavation here between 1889 and 1903, which turned the estuary into a working port and forever changed the landscape.
You can read more about this history at the cache site. While there, glance across the water at Alameda and imagine what it must have been like when you could merely walk across land to get there!
