Geocache Description:

Recently Team IPA took a hike up onto the BACKBONE, a small ridge of Shellrock Mtn. We were looking for a benchmark, but sadly we were not able to locate it. We did however locate both Reference Marks. After much thought while we sat on the BACKBONE and awed at the view, we decided a cache was needed to show this view to others.

We were not able to place the cache on the BACKBONE as it would be to close to another cache, so we located it south just enough to get the required 528 feet. You are looking for a standard size AMMO can hidden under the root ball of a fallen tree. Once you have found the cache you must take a walk north about 100 feet or so and take in the view on the BACKBONE. If you are interested, take the time to search for the Benchmark while you are there (RC2324, N 45° 41.300 W 121° 43.787 (NAD 83)). I have provided parking coordinates and a description for you. I have visited this spot several times and this seems to be the accepted parking in all the hiking books, even to the point that I read somewhere that you will pass three metal retaining walls just prior to the parking area. Drive Interstate 84 east from Portland to a spot 0.7 miles past milepost 52 and pull off the freeway into a small unmarked gravel area at the start of a guardrail on the right shoulder. Hop over the guardrail and walk east on a section of the old scenic highway, look for the trail to your right and follow it up. Pick a spot even with the cache and head across the slop to make the find. If this is your first time to this beautiful Oregon State Park (look it up and you will see, “Lindsey Creek State Park”), take the time to grab the other caches in the area or climb Shellrock Mtn (although I don’t think anyone actually goes to the top as there’s no view from there, just trees).

June 2021; Update to the listing, I left the original parking coordinates so you could see how we used to visit this area. Although the original parking can still be used, I think it’s better to use either Starvation Creek or Wyeth as your paring point. You can walk along the new Columbia River Gorge Trail. I’ve added two way points where you can leave the paved path and start your adventure. Rock Wall East it where I started up, you will soon come accross a trail you should just follow. Rock Wall West is the other end of this 4 foot high wall and if you look close you will find the faint trail that leads up. When I say up, it’s not straight up, more of a gradual climb and once you make it to the rock slide it will be multiple switchbacks. I have one more waypoint, this is the point where you should leave the switchback trail and make your 100 meter climb to the cache. Then go out on the BACKBONE and enjoy the view.
