While hiking up to the top of Mount Ka’ala with friends to the radio towers, I decided to "explore" a little further. The terrain was steep (downward) and there were a lot of thorns, but the spot has an overwhelming view of Schofield Barracks, Kunia, and the rest of Central Oahu. Unfortunately by the time I set the cache, the clouds rushed in and I was denied a good picture shot. If you happen to tackle this bad boy and have clear skies, please feel free to post pictures of the great views. The trail, from the top, is actually well marked (blue ribbon) and I am wondering if there is a trail coming up from this side. I didn't have time to explore this more as we had to get back up the mountain so that we could go back down :-( The trail coming up is well documented in the series of caches coming up, so be prepared to climb rock faces, ropes, cables, and hanging on by grabbing a fenceline. The “board walk” was especially enjoyable when you get to the top. I highly recommend that you DO NOT go alone and bring a lot of water and snacks. As for attire, rain coat, gloves, extra socks, and good hiking footwear. Hiking pants and a long sleeve shirt is recommended, especially for the last portion as there are several thorny branches along the marked path.
Cache contains a Lord of the Rings TB that's visiting Hawaii, a large Smiley face sticker, and a donated Skotlee pathtag.
