Geocache Description:

Samish Peak is my unofficial name for the 1335' knob west of the main body of Chuckanut Mountain and due north of Lake Samish County Park.

While there is nothing particularly interesting about Samish Peak's communication tower-topped summit, about 450' west of the towers there is an odd clearing (see picture above). This clearing is about 200'x175' and is almost completely unvegetated except for a deep layer of moss and a couple small trees. While there certainly are other places in the Chuckanut Mountains where the sandstone is exposed, they are steep cliffs where vegetation can't grow. This spot, on the other hand, is a gentle slope.

This cache will take you to this interesting clearing. Start at Lake Samish Park and follow the trails up the hill, eventually connecting to the logging road system. At (N 48° 40.756 W 122° 25.200) turn right onto a logging road and follow it a mile to the summit, staying left at the first junction and right at the second. There is a nice view of Lake Samish and Bellingham Bay from the cache!

UPDATE (Thanks to badger49 for the info) : When you reach the tower site slip between the brown cement building on the left and the tower fence area on the right....about a 1 1/2 foot gap. About 50 feet into the woods you will find a mountain bike trail that will lead you through the woods and to the cache area.

Happy Hunting
