Geocache Description:

Dash for the Cache geo race will take place from 9am to at least 3PM Saturday May 31st 2014. This will be a different type of event than you’re use to. This event will take place along the 9 miles of the Shenango River Trail from Big Bend to New Hamburg and continue north to Kidds Mill Covered Bridge.

What is Dash for the Cache you ask? 25 random containers with a marking tool inside will be placed along the trail at various D/T rating levels and each carry a different point value. For example a 1/1 D/T will carry a 1 point value while a 4/4 D/T rating will carry a 5 points value. There will be 2 “bonus” caches as well that will carry a much higher D/T rating and point value. So you’ll have to plan ahead on what caches you want to try for. The most points at the end wins, in the event of a tie we’ll use your time to complete the course as the tiebreaker. So do you get the easy ones for fewer points or the harder ones for more points? There will be 1 hour allowed prior to the start of the race to download cache coordinates and plan your strategy. You’ll then be given 4 hours to complete the course with points being deducted for finishing over the time limit. So plan accordingly!

We’ll have single racers and teams competing. Teams will consist of 2 people or you can go solo but you’re more than welcome to group together along the way, scorecards will not be combined though and points only count on your card. Once completed, we’ll have a pot luck dinner and tally up the totals to decide the winners, play geogames, sit around and talk caching, and find a few temp caches at Kidds Mill Covered Bridge.

The plan is to have cachers meet at Kidds Mill Covered Bridge and group up with other cachers and carpool to Big Bend for the start of the event. After doing the trail, folks who parked at Kidds Mill originally will then carpool the others to their vehicles at Big Bend. So folks bringing a dish for the pot luck dinner would want to park at Kidds Mill in order to get your dish for the dinner afterwards.

A big thanks to The Shenango Conservancy, the kind folks who maintain the trail, for allowing us to take over the trail for the day. We hope to see cachers from all over the region and then some. So tell all the cachers you may know to come out and play in our neck of the woods for the day. If anyone from out of town is coming and needs info on the area and places to stay, feel free to contact us and we will point you in the right direction.
