Geocache Description:

For more information on the way, check out my website.

This cache is placed at the former site of the Deming Fire Lookout.  The lookout site got it's start in 1929 as an 80' pole tower.  In 1947 the pole was replaced with a 75' steel tower.

In 1965 that tower was replaced with a 40' wooden DNR tower.  But wait! There is more! That DNR tower was removed in the late 1980's and now resides on display next to the Forks Museum! See it there on the left?

At the lookout site, I found the footings and what looks like part of the old lightening rod but I could be way off on that one.  I left it next to the cache, tell me what you think it is.  There may be more remnants but there was a small amount of snow on the ground so while I poked around a bit, I am sure I missed something.

There are several ways to reach this cache site.  When I placed this cache, I hiked in from the Deming area (seemed fitting) along the Cronk Rd, just shy of 4.4 miles one way.  It was a beautiful day and the views were outstanding, I could see Baker, the Sister's, Bellingham and the bay, the islands, Canada and the Olympics...just outstanding!  Park at the provided coords and just head on up.  The slope is gentle, you only gain 2100 feet over those miles.  I do believe this would be a great and doable bike ride, I intend to find out in the near future!  This would also make an excellent snowshoe if you are so inclined!  My maps (NWTopos with trails, Switchbacks.com) had the road (Cronk Rd.) up so the way was easy to follow.  You will come to where the  road seems to end but do not be dismayed, on the other side of the berm the old road continues on and joins back up with another major road (turn right here) in just 1500 ft.

On your way here you will be passing through all stages of a working tree farm including recent clear cuts so if you are the type that find walking on logging roads and passing through clear cuts offensive, be forewarned and no whining if you choose to come.
