Geocache Description:

Please come and join us to say goodbye to our good friend Richt2000 who will no longer be working here in Nottingham as of the end of January. All Geocachers welcome.

Where: Nottingham Knight
When: 23rd January 2014
Time: 7pm onwards. Food served until 10.00pm.

We have chosen this pub as it was at a Dragonlady event here last January that many of us met Richard for the first time. He was the one looking slightly lost whilst holding the tell-tale GPS!

The event is being held by Team Norfolk, which consists of the_dolans, KaosCL, James@Bunny, BigLynx, Spire67 and of course Richt2000. We’ve all become great friends over the past year and we will really miss our weekly pub quiz nights and crazy caching expeditions with Rich!

Each one of us would like to share some of our highlights from the past 12 months.

Quotes from the team

The_dolans

I really enjoyed the day we all did the Alphabet Soup series in a VERY hilly part of the Derbyshire Dales in December. While the rest of us were all gasping for breath and having to stop for breaks every 5 minutes, Rich was powering up the hills at full speed, very impressive for a man of his age! There was also the very unfortunate incident where I lost not one, but both of my boots in the mud. It had us all in fits of laughter while I just stood there in my socks not being able to move. When asked by Kee what she could do to help, I said “Take a photo and put it on GeM” of course!

There was also the time we decided to go all the way to Suffolk in an evening, just to tick off another county, but we couldn't just stop at Suffolk and we decided to grab Essex as well. It then occurred to Kee that we were very close to Herts too! I persuaded Rich to take us as it would be my 1500th cache. Except I'd only glanced at my phone quickly and had actually only been on 1449 not 1499. Oops!

I remember meeting Rich for the first time at the event last January after seeing a lone wanderer with a GPS hanging round his neck. During the last year we have all got to know him well & he has become an (occasionally) useful part of the pub quiz team. We have had some great caching adventures including a couple of very entertaining evening's completing the excellent Logopoly series of caches, a slightly crazy evenings drive going to Norfolk just to get a cache to get the county ticked off. On our second outing to Gedling colliery getting & caught out in a thunderstorm just to find a couple of extra caches than planned, probably the funniest thing I saw all year was Rich going flying in a soggy field whilst rushing back to the cars then having to check in at his posh hotel covered in mud & soaking wet. The year was finished off with a very hilly day doing alphabet soup in December where I’m certain he was trying to kill the rest of the group off just so he could get to the GeM Christmas challenge caches later in the day (yes, he is a challenge obsessive). Hope you meet lots more caching buddies where you’re working next & come back anytime, we still need to go fish. James.

I really enjoyed the caching trip where I did the BYL series with Rich. We took my 4x4 as the route would have been rather more challenging for his car. At one point Rich spotted a trig point so he asked to stop in order to note down the details in case the YOSM ever moved to it. He was about to hop back in when I said don't bother we are only 8m from the next cache.
He really put a smile on my face though when he put out a series of caches for his 40th birthday. He used the series to celebrate cache owners who have gone to the trouble of putting out unusual, demanding or just plain down right annoying caches. So I was amazed when he had replicated one of my caches in honour of the caches I create. Many thanks I really appreciate the acknowledgement.

Little did we know, a year ago, that a chance encounter with a stranger at a caching event would result in such strong friendships being formed. Rich approached us at a crowded bar on the off chance we were cachers, even though he was the one with a GPS hanging around his neck on a personalised lanyard! Rich soon became a regular on our pub quiz team, and we found ourselves going on more and more crazy caching trips, ticking off the counties, the DT grid squares, the challenges, the numbers, you name it! The highlight had to be the most spectacular thunderstorm in living memory. Team Norfolk, as we had become known, were out for an evening’s caching on Gedling Colliery when it began. In the 15 minutes it took to get back to the cars, darkness fell and the thunderstorm surrounded us, frightening but amazing as lightening lit up the sky from every angle and the thunder boomed almost constantly. We beat the rain back to the cars, so in a moment of madness, decided to set out in the opposite direction for just one or two (or five) more quick caches. Predictably, the torrential downpour started as we reached the furthest point from a road. Torches were useless as the lightening flashed every second or two, the roar of the thunder deafening, the rain blinding. Drenched to the skin in seconds, the rain stinging every bit of skin, we slipped and slid through ploughed fields as fast as we could (still stopping for caches, we are obsessive after all!), All of a sudden, a lightening flash showed Rich upright, the next flash showed him lying down in the mud! Once he was reunited with his glasses, we all fell about laughing, he had to check into his hotel later in that state! We finally got back to the road, where BigLynx, who had had the sense to stay with the cars, drove to meet us, laughing so hard he couldn’t drive straight! That night is etched in our memories forever!

Well, Where to start? We met Rich in a pub, aimlessly wandering around looking for all the other Cachers at an event. Not being a "local" we took him under our wing like a lost puppy he then followed us around since. We've had many a funny time with him and at his expense. Things I will remember Rich for: Meeting up with him and the Tucker clan (Jeanette, Dan and Abbie) at the 2013 Pirate Mania event. Then a week later meeting back up with them at the Mega. Whilst at the 2013 Mega we attempted the mad task of 11 cache types in a day. It meant a hectic day rushing around and flying hello's to many of the cachers we knew as we had a long day ahead of us. We still took a little time to partake in some of the side attractions at the 2013 Mega. Firstly me actually fitting into a Zorb, then knocking Rich flying. Unfortunately for me the exit strategy had been overlooked. Then running over for a go on the human table football. After that it was back to the quest of the 11 in a day. Many hours later and many miles later we managed it. Definitely felt that the next day!
