Geocache Description:

This is a series of geocaches to commemorate our Great State of New Mexico.  All of the geocaches are named for settlements that once thrived in Dona Ana county but some of them are now nothing more than footnotes in our history.  They have all played an important role in the settling and growth of our county and some of them are still active communities, rich with culture, architecture, and historic buildings.

Chamberino was called San Luis de Chamberino when it was settled in 1868 in the valley floor.  Prior to that time it had been a heavy bosque where cattle and horse rustlers hid their stolen stock.  Floods in 1892 and 1894 caused many families to move to La Mesa but the remaining families built a new town in the foothills, its’ current location. On NM 28, W of the Rio Grande, 18 miles S of Las Cruces. Reported to be an Indian word meaning "deep ford"; and also as a corruption of the Spanish word for brush that grew in this section. On E side of the river is the settlement called Berino. Post Office 1880-1882, 1893 - .
