Geocache Description:

Went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.

A simple puzzle for everyone.

Crossroads feature heavily in a number of folklores, including the great music of the delta blues, where Robert Johnson, ridiculed for his poor playing by a fellow musician, returned a few months later, playing like the devil himself. Some said he made a pact, in exchange for a fiendish ability on the guitar, he sold his soul at the crossroads. Surprisingly, the myth only ever mentions Johnson and no other modern musician, which perhaps suggests it is of fairly recent origin and hasn't had time to mutate. Nicolo Paganini, the 18th Century violin virtuoso, was also reputed to have made a similar pact, but I don't know if the Crossroads were involved.

Mr Johnson

Other crossroads myths include the "headless mule" from Brazil, which even reading the Wikipedia entry Headless_Mule gave me the heebyjeebies, being a reincarnation of an adulterous woman that gallops screaming through the night across seven parishes.

Possibly the source of many of these myths comes from the tradition of hanging convicted criminals from "dule trees" at crossroads where justice would be graphically seen by all passers by. The crossroad may represent a literal crossing, or perhaps a more figurative inter-connection between good and evil.

According to the writers of the TV series "Supernatural" the accepted way to make a bargain with a crossroads demon is (apparently) to go down to the crossroads at midnight, dig a hole and bury a box with the bone of a black cat or some graveyard dirt. I didn't bury the cache, and it wasn't midnight. It isn't the biggest hide I've hidden, but it isn't small either. Room for swaps...

The cache is at one of the four coordinates listed below: It is up to you to go down to the crossroads, visit each waypoint and check if you have sold your soul, or found the cache.

NW: S35 53.551 E137 07.629
NE: S35 53.545 E137 07.666
SE: S35 53.565 E137 07.684
SW: S35 53.583 E137 07.644

Have fun but please do not stand at the listed coordinates, it is a road and traffic will not be expecting you to be standing in the middle of it, especially at midnight. There is plenty of room to pull off the road. By the time you get there, you will appreciate how important is is to drive and park safely around here.

Important Note: No souls were harmed in the placing of this geocache.
