The Upper Pine River has its headwaters near the intersection of County Highway P and County Highway AA, northwest of Wild Rose. The portion of the river from the headwaters to the mill pond in Wild Rose is considered the Upper portion of the river.

The Upper Pine River is a Class I trout stream. The Class I designation continues until the Lower Pine River reaches an area just past the Saxeville Mill Pond, at which point it becomes a Class II trout stream. The entire Pine River system covers 35.98 river miles.
