Geocache Description:

This cache is one of 7 additional caches which can be treated either as a shorter option to the Meirionnydd Mountains series which would just involve a 4 mile circuit or if like me you like being out in the hills from dawn to dusk can be done on a single circuit with the MM caches on Rhobell. This would involve an approximately 10 mile walk. All of the caches are 200mm round screw top plastic containers with only a log book.

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING A PENCIL.

Parking is only really possible in a public car park (no fee) near Ysgol Machreth (Primary School) on the eastern side of Llanfachreth.

The church in Llanfachreth is dedicated to Celtic saint Machreth.. Until around the 8th century the area was pagan but was Christianised during this time by wandering Celtic monks. The only other dedication to Machreth is in Anglesey, he was likely a follower of St. Cadfan in the wake of the Cunedda invasion from the South East of Scotland in the 5th century. Alternatively, since there have been no more dedications, St Machreth might have been local holy man or hermit. Tradition has it that he had a retreat (cell) above the village in a wood locally known as Coed-cwm-yr-Eglwys.

The usual precautions will need to be considered before attempting these mountain caches. Strong walking boots, full waterproof clothing, first aid kit and map & compass (and ability to use them in poor visibility) will be needed.
