Geocache Description:

Cache # 202.

This multi highlights some of the pioneering families and other early residents of the Wangaratta district. Depending on how long you linger at all the points of interest the walk to gather information may take up to 45 minutes.

There is a mystery cache located nearby that may also be of interest to you called "John Fuller - Who am I?" (GC 4YC2B)


The starting coordinates will take you to the main gates where you can park and start your stroll.

1.  Lost in the Chinese Section S 36° 22.315 E 146° 17.420

Allie Mohomed was born in Punjab, India in 1869.  He is buried a long way from home.

2.  From Editor of The Chronicle to Premier of Victoria S 36° 22.337 E 146° 17.495

In 1880 John became Editor of the Chronicle in Wangaratta.  In 1894 he was persuaded to stand for  Parliament and was elected member for Wangaratta & Ovens in the Legislative Assembly.  In 1917 his party won the election and he was chosen to be Premier of Victoria.  In 1927 on the occasion of the opening of the Federal Parliament in Canberra, John Bowser received a knighthood conferred on him by the Duke of York, later King George VI.  He served in Parliament for 35 years.

George was born in NSW but came to this district as a young man.  He drove his cattle south and settled at Oxley Plains, naming his homestead "Wangaratta".  He was elected as trustee of the land donated by William Clark for Holy Trinity Cathedral and was made an honorary JP in 1852.

5. Bloodlines S 36° 22.372 E 146° 17.495

Ben Warby Jnr, his wife Sarah and their daughter are together here.  Benjamin was a pioneer of the Taminick/Wangaratta area and the Warby Ranges are named after his family.  He is credited with pioneering the introduction of thoroughbred bloodlines to district horses.
How old was Ben when he died in 1869? = HJ

6.  Agnes R. S 36° 22.353 E 146° 17.441

Agnes was born in Scotland in 1793.  She arrived in Australia in 1823 with her husband David and three children.  She owned Carraragarmungee Run, a property that extended 35 km from Ovens to Yackandandah.
David held a position in the Royal Navy.  The number of letters in that profession is? = K
By the way, the term relict is an ancient term, now archaic, for widow or widower! Quaint!

7.  Mah Ket S 36° 22.354 E 146° 17.437

Mah Ket arrived from China in 1855.  He later moved closer to Wangaratta and became a respected storekeeper and tobacco grower.  At some stage he changed his name to Ah Ket.  His only son William became a prominent lawyer.  Ah Ket died in 1896.

A victim of the siege of Glenrowan lies here.  There are three Jones children here, John, Jane and Ann.
The Jones were not as lucky as Isabella Pressley.
