Geocache Description:

***Cache has been replaced but you may have to expand your search area by a few feet. Still an easy find***

This is one of ten caches placed for the 2014 Cache Across Maryland. Each location was picked specifically to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all ten, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, located in 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, is a state history and archaeology museum exploring the changing cultures and environment of the Chesapeake Bay region of the past 12,000 years. Visitors can investigate thousands of years of human history by touring archaeological sites and trails, acres of working farmland, restored farm buildings, and museum exhibits, and by attending educational programs. More than 70 archaeological sites have been identified, from the prehistoric period 9,000 years ago through the 20th century. JPPM offers many special programs throughout the season, including heritage celebrations, children's activities, tours, concerts, dances, lectures, and educational programs. JPPM also provides preservation services, artifact conservation, and conducts important archaeological research. The Museum is the proud home of the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory.

One of the many highlights of the JPPM is the Indian Village. The Indian Village was created in 2007 for the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of John Smith’s exploration of Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. It provides a glimpse into life as it might have been when John Smith visited the people who lived along the Patuxent River. Although it was built using modern hatchets, knives and saws, there is nothing modern in the Indian Village. It was built right next to the shore of the Patuxent River and is surrounded by forest. You can walk to a small beach on the river just a couple of hundred yards from the Village.

The Indian Village currently has four longhouses, a central fire pit, and racks for smoking fish and meat. It is protected on one side by a palisade—a tall fence of poles set into the ground. People along the Patuxent built palisades to help keep out raiders from other tribes who would take the stores of dried corn. A working garden is located just outside the palisade where a variety of plants represent the crops native people were growing.

The paved path leading from the parking area at N 38 23.665 W 076 30.428 makes it easy to get to the village, while interpretive signs along the path provide background information about the native people of this area.

The JPPM’s longhouses are outfitted with the many different kinds of tools, furs, baskets, and other materials that the Patuxent Indians would have used. There are public and school programs and days when the Indian Village is simply open for the public to see and enjoy. This area was also important in the War of 1812. You can learn about the significance of this area to that war from the other two geocaches on the property: GC22AMF - SSB - Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum #1, and GC2326Y - SSB - Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum #2.

To get to the geocache, park at the provided coordinates; do not drive to the cache and no night caching! The trail head is a dirt road and it is a flat walk to the river. This geocache has been approved for placement by Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum.

The Visitor Center is open 7 days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The center closes for the winter on November 26th (the Tuesday before Thanksgiving) and will reopen in 2014 on March 1st. The is no fee for admission.
