Geocache Description:

This Cache is placed in Verona Park near Porcello Lane. Take Bloomfield Avenue and turn into Lakeview Place. The road will fork, stay to the right and follow Porcello Lane until you see the parking area on your left. Walk toward the lake and make a right on the walking path. Follow the path until you see the lamp post #2444. Look to the right of the path and find the tree that forms a "V". This is the area you seek. This is a quick find, child and pet friendly.

I am hiding this geocache as a project for my eighth grade science class to teach our fellow geocachers about ecology and the impact we, as humans, make on the environment.  In my geocache, I'm going to teach you about polar bear extinction.  Polar bears are the largest carnivorous land mammals on Earth.  They are about 7 to 8 feet long from nose to tail and weigh between 1,000 to 1,700 pounds.  They eat mainly seals, walruses and whale carcasses.  The life span of a polar bear can reach 25 years.  They live in Russia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland.  The polar bears were the first vertebrate species to be listed by the US Endangered Species Act.  They are threatened by extinction primarily because of global warming.  Rising temperatures in the world's oceans are causing sea ice to disappear for longer and longer periods leaving polar bears insufficient time to hunt.  Polar bears can only survive in areas where the oceans freeze.
