Burning of the Midnight Lamp Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Aye-yo: I am very surprised that Portland accepted new geocaching guidelines that allows very few geocaches in this huge public park with over 600 acres and many trails. Recently bicyclists protested at several Portland parks. As a result, bicyclists will likely have many of their Portland policy restrictions removed permanently. Obviously, bicyclists have very strong support in Portland while the geocaching community seems to be fading away...

This is a great park to hike along and find some caches. Soon many of the caches here will be archived because the Portland P&R chose to recently enhance restrictions for geocaching while promoting the usage of trails for bicyclists, horses and dogs. Spent many hours putting these caches in place for the entire geocaching community and now they are but a memory. Sad but true...

Geocache Description:

Various portions of your path can be very steep and can be very slippery when wet. Be extra careful, this hike is not recommended for minors or those with weak ankles. This lower service road might be difficult to find but the top portion can be found a short distance West of the park road entrance. A satellite view of the area shows a large water storage tank east of the fence corner. You need to go down the road and back up a steep hillside because of a barbed wire fence around the storage tank. Along the way you could hike up passed a couple concrete ledges if you come from the service road below. Go to the top ledge just before the fence corner then use the hint if necessary. Or you could wander a long way from the Old Holgate trail. Note that the old developed trail that went to the parking lot is closed because of the construction zone. However, there are some small undeveloped foot and deer trails here and there. But whatever path you take, do NOT go beyond the construction fence or beyond any 'No Trespassing' sign. The cache is near a location with a little view of the bowling alley to the northeast. The cache is a black 6" x 6" round jar container is hidden very well. Please replace as well as you found it with some natural covering. Enjoy the view and the hike. Congrats to gjhimages and Wesser 26 for the shared FTF.
