In an earlier life the NZ member of the ROOKIWI team was a Civil Engineering Draughtsman. As part of the training in the then Ministry of Works, cadets were expected to study for, and attain, the NZ Certificate of Engineering (Civil). In the fifth and final year that included the design and drawing of plans for a structural project selected by the Chief Draughtsman. This was carried out under the supervision of a Senior Draughtsman and a Registered Civil Engineer.
In my case it was this bridge!!
It is a conventional cast in-situ, concrete, mild steel reinforced three span structure with reinforced concrete slab piers. Much later in life, family trips to Central Otago were always marked by a quip from the back seat, "have we reached Dad's bridge yet!!"
The little 45° bends on the top of the railing uprights were most certainly non standard for the time and I recall the teasing I got from senior draughtsmen that I would never get them past the District Commissioner of Works, Jack Henderson when he signed off the plans. He did challenge me with a little glint in his eye and although he was a gruff terrifying figure to us cadets, underneath he really liked seeing young guys trying their best.
