Church Micro 4968...Wolviston:
The Church of St Peter in Wolviston is situated on West Hartlepool Road. It was built in 1876 by Austin, Johnson and Hicks on the site of an old medieval chapel. This brick built Grade II listed building is typical of the late Victorian era. In 1969 a reredos (shrine) was installed, originally part of the old Holy Trinity Church in Gateshead which was demolished in 1830. Above the altar are three stained glass windows depicting Charity, Hope and Faith. The church was extended in 1972 with a rather unsympathetic brick annexe to the northern side. Inside the church is a memorial to the 21 men from the parish who died in the First World War. The A689 Hartlepool road used to run past the church, until it was moved northward to its present location in the 1970’s.
Cache details:
Parking is available outside the church and at the village hall opposite. The cache is a small container so please bring your own pen. In wet weather it can get muddy so appropriate footwear is advised.
