Geocache Description:

An alternative route to Akaroa for those with 4WD machines, although I have placed this cache just after the end of the tar seal (going up) so the the 2WD cachers can have a go too.  HOWEVER - 2WD machines do NOT attempt the stock route any further up.

Back in the old days when Adam was a cowboy, I used to be the Tourism Manager for Banks Peninsula needing me to travel there often.  I remember this route from a good friend of mine who took 4WD tours to Akaroa for the day and this was the route he used.  Unfortunately, 2WD cars try to use the track sometimes and as a consequence establish the ruts in the road as the (usually) front wheel drive traction struggles with the slope and carves out the ruts.  I even encountered a camper van on this route that had realised the errors of its ways and tried to do a 36 point turn three quarters of the way up and became completely stuck as he tried to go back down again.

Combine this route with the other stock route down from the Summit Road to Duvauchelles and you can bypass many a truck, tour bus, camper van and little old ladies in Suzuki Swifts doing 40kph (I know - apologies to any cacher who has a Suzuki Swift).

Both routes need to be driven with respect - the terrain is OK (apart from the ruts) but you do tend to get idiots who have little experience on such tracks or worse, those with experience and the vehicle who like to have a little "hoon".  I hasten to add that the majority of route users are not of this ilk.

Anyway - enough of the preaching,  How about the cache?  This is a 2 litre bucket with the usual log book etc and is hidden in a bush that is about or just above head height from the road.  Recommend parking near the tar seal area and walking up the 40m or so, along the bank rather than the road itself.  If this route is taken, then the cache is at GL.

SO PLEASE, PLEASE PARK SAFELY - vehicles coming down may not be able to stop with the ruts affecting their ABS.  Geokinder and geomutts need to be well looked after.

I have introduced a young (and somewhat gorgeous) young woman to the game - so look out of Hekstar - she found her first 10 caches today.
