Zagreb je dobio svoje prvo Dobrovoljno vatrogasno društvo već 1869. godine. Poticaj za takovu ideju dali su Pavao Hatz, Đuro Deželić i Janko Grahor.
Kad se zagrebačko Dobrovoljno vatrogasno društvo 20.09.1909 preselilo u novo vatrogasno spremište na Savskoj cesti, počela se ozbiljno razmatrati mogućnost osnivanja Stalne plaćene vatrogasne straže. Svečano osnivanje profesionalne vatrogasne straže obavljeno je 1.listopada 1910. god.
Vatrogasna zajednica grada Zagreba osnovana je 1930. godine. Zasnovana na povijesnim temeljima vatrogastva u Zagrebu, ona danas objedinjava 56 dobrovoljnih vatrogasnih društva s područja Zagreba i Javnu vatrogasnu postrojbu Grada Zagreba.

Vatrogasna postaja Centar, kao jedna od pet vatrogasnih postaja Grada Zagreba nalazi se u samom srcu urbanog dijela Gradske četvrti Centar u Savskoj cesti 1.
Područje rada Postaje Centar prostire se na:
• ISTOK do Bukovačke, Držićeve ulice te Križne ulice do rijeke Save,
• JUG do rijeke Save,
• SJEVER do Medvednice,
• ZAPAD do ulica Črnomerec, odnosno Hrvatskog Sokola do rijeke Save.
Područje djelovanja Postaje u slučaju većih intervencija je cijelo područje Grada Zagreba i Zagrebačke županije.
Intervencije:
U zadnjih pet godina prosjek intervencija iznosi cca 1400 godišnje od čega:
• 500 intervencija požara u stanovima i obiteljskim kućama,
• 250 požara na otvorenom,
• 250 tehničkih intervencija u objektima,
• 200 tehničkih intervencija u prometu i
• 200 ostalih intervencija.

When the Zagreb Volunteer Fire Department 20/09/1909 moved to a new repository on fire Sava road , began to seriously consider the possibility of establishing a permanent paid fire guard. Ceremony establishment of professional fire guard was conducted October 1, 1910th year.
The fire department of the city of Zagreb was founded in 1930 year. Based on the historical foundations of the fire service in Zagreb , she now brings together 56 volunteer fire companies in the area of Zagreb and Public Fire Department in Zagreb .

Field work becomes the center extends to :
• EAST to Bukovacke , Drziceva and Cross- streets to the river basin ,
