The gated compound on top of the Mount of Olives was built by the orders of the German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II includes a hospital (named after his wife, Auguste Viktoria), a church with a stunning tower, a kindergarden, playgrounds, a shop, a café, a guest house as well as offices and homes for families.
The visiting hours for the hospital are 11-14 and 16-20 o'clock. The tower is open Monday til Saturday from 8.30 til 13 o'clock. The café is open Tuesday til Saturday from 10 til 16 o'clock. On Sundays there might be church services, better check online at evangelisch-in-jerusalem.org. German "after work" club Wednesdays 18-21 o'clock. The guards might want to know your destination.
The tower offers spectacular 360 degrees views over Jerusalem as well as the desert. You may see the Dead Sea and Jordan when there is a good view, and the lights of Amman and the Allenby bridge at night even from the ground.
If you enter the gate, stay left and pass a parking, the hospital and a playground. Follow a path through some pine woodland to a shelter overlooking the east. This is where you should start looking.
