Geocache Description:

Easy level walk from Highnam. Steps and slight slope to tower.

Small cache. Pencil needed, tweezers may be useful.

A pleasant walk from Highnam, popular locally with locals and dog walkers, willl take you to Lassington and St. Oswald's Tower.

The tower of Lassington Church was begun in the late 11th Century. The manor of Lassington, listed in the 1086 Domesday survey belonged to the Archbishop of York.

All that remains today of the church is the late Saxon tower of St. Oswald. The church was declared redundant in 1972, and as the church had fallen into disrepair the body of the church was demolished in 1975. The Benefice of Lassington was united with Highnam in 1928. The last marriage in the church was 1947 and the last baptism was in 1956. From 1955 the united Benefice included Rudford, to which Tibberton and Taynton were added in 1984.

St Oswald was the Christian King of Northumbria, killed by a pagan Penda of Mercia in 642. His relics were brought to Gloucester in 909 by Elfleda, wife of Ethelred, Lord of Mercia, to the Priory which was then dedicated to S. Oswald.

The tower is on the Wysis Way, a long distance footpath which runs from Monmouth to Kemble.

This is my first cache, which I hope you will enjoy.
