When german craftsman arrived to Skänninge in the end of the 1300-century they started to build this church as they build churches in Germany. In the year 1306 they open the churh and dedicated it to the virgin Mary (mother of Jesus). In Swedish she was called Vår Fru then the name of the church became Vårfrukyrkan.
