This series was placed to highlight the the ATCHISON, TOPEKA & SANTA FE RAILWAY that used to snake through Temescal Canyon.
Back in the 1880's this line went to Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, Murrieta, Temecula and for a few years traveled through the Santa Margarita river to Oceanside. The train hauled crops out of Murrieta, rock, sand and clay from Alberhill, and when they used to quarry Granite in Temecula they used this line to send granite up to Sacramento where it was used in the building of our State Capitol. In the early 1930's the tracks south of Lake Elsinore were pulled up and the ties were sold off to locals for $.10 each. You can still find fences around Alberhill and Wildomar that were made from the ties. The line was cut back to Alberhill in the 1970's and the rest was cut off in the 1980's. If you travel down Temescal Canyon you can see a few remaining bridges and at the entrance to Pacific Clay you can still see the rails that they paved over. Along Lake Street you can see the slots that were cut for the tracks. An easy way to follow the line is to follow the high pressure gas pipeline as it runs along the railroad easement. Also along parts of the line the Eucalyptus trees still run along the old track bed.
