The Hurunui Hut used to be just a tin shack used by hunters and not well known - Now it has been done up by the Deer Stalkers Assoc and has three bunks but is still a basic hut, used more by hunters than trampers. Water has to be got from a nearby stream.
The Hut is also now signposted off the North South Track. Please be aware that the walk does involve stream crossings and needs caution in wet weather. Good tramping footwear and warm gear should always be taken when walking in the Kaimais. The track is good and mainly up a tramline but can get slippery and a bit bogey in winter.
The area has a lot of history and it is interesting remembering the hard working men working cutting down trees and getting them out using the tram and haul lines. Those were the days when men were made of steel and tools were made of wood! BYO PEN
