Geocache Description:

This cache is in another of our favourite spots – it has been enjoyed by three generations of our family thus far! The cache is safely away from the main road. You are looking for a micro cache which has been well hidden - you will need a pen to sign the log. Please return to its exact hiding place.

The cache is hidden at Picnic Island which can be found by walking along the old Roman Road from Penhelig gardens. Penhelig train station is close to the gardens and there is a small parking area over the railway bridge from Picnic Island.

The walk to Picnic Island was featured on the BBC’s Weatherman Walking in 2013. The following extracts are taken from the longer, more detailed walk which can be found on the related link on the cache page:

“Roman Road - Although known as the ‘Roman Road’ it was in fact built for horse and carriage in 1808. The sea has by now eroded much of this old road but it rarely floods even at high tide so it’s safe for a stroll any time of the day – just make sure you wear good shoes as it can get quite slippery when wet.”

“Picnic Island - Picnic Island is another misnomer – it was in fact a small peninsula now separated from the ‘mainland’ after being cut off by a cutting for the railway in 1863. Nevertheless it has a small grassy area on top with a bench that would be a pleasant spot for a picnic.”

Although the BBC state that the Roman Road rarely floods, please be careful around high tide. Picnic Island can be accessed from the main road too. The area can get rather busy in the holidays but you can always enjoy the view whilst waiting for Muggles to pass.

Update Dec 2019: Direct access to Picnic Island is now sadly closed from both the main road and coastal path/Roman Road. You can still reach the island area by the coastal path but cannot access the main viewpoint and seating area. It is still worth making the trip along the coastal path to see the ‘island’ and the cache has been moved to an accessible point (26m from its original position) where you can still enjoy the view. There is no access to the cache or island from the road only via the Roman Road (coastal path) so you will need to plan your walk carefully according to the tides. Update May 2023: We believe that the bridge to the main road is now open again along with access to Picnic Island but will confirm on our next visit. The cache remains in its new position as detailed above.
