A Stake in the Ground Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

DukeRoom: Geospillz has provided maintenance for this cache and I recently found out that Randy passed away last month. This cache had a great 10 year run, but I will archive now since it's too far away for me to provide maintenance. Hopefully, someone else will place a cache that will guide people to this marker.

Geocache Description:

This should be a quick P&G on your drive through Knott's Island.  The cache is located between the Welcome to Knotts Island sign and the "Dividing Line" NC Historical Marker.

Congratulations to geospillz for a very quick FTF!

We visited Knott's Island to find Boundary Markers #2 and #3 and to ride the ferry over to Currituck. Since there aren't many caches on Knott's Island and we found the Dividing Line history to be very interesting, we thought this spot needed a cache.

The nearby “Dividing Line” NC historical marker (A15) was placed in 1938 and reads, “Commissioners drove the first stake for the Virginia-Carolina boundary, Mar. 18, 1728, three miles N.E., across Currituck Sound.” There is a geocache (GC2HE6N) near Boundary Marker #1 (FW1612), which is the first stake that this historical marker is referring to and is much more difficult to find. You need to either take a long bike or hiking trip through False Cape State Park on the Virginia side or drive a four wheel drive vehicle along the beach for 11 miles north of Corolla on the North Carolina side.

These boundary markers were set in 1887. Boundary Marker #2 (FW1613) is located less than a mile north on the west side of Knotts Island Road. Boundary Marker #3 (FX3093) is located between 4 and 5 miles to the west on the east side of NC 615 (Marsh Causeway).

I hope you enjoy the “Dividing Line” history.
