This two-stage cache takes you through the heart of our specially managed woodpecker area. Park at the Valley Trailhead and follow the wide gravel trail into the woods. The two cache boxes are located just off the trail.
The first cache box contains information to help you identify tee holes made by different species of woodpeckers. Take one of the ID cards with you and continue up the trail to the second cache box. Along the way, look at the trees on either side of the trail and find the numerous bird holes in the trunks. Can you identify which species of woodpeckers made them?
The second cache box contains a logbook, pencil, our collector card, and additional information about the park’s Red-headed Woodpecker population. Use the nearby bench to sit for a while and watch for these beautiful birds. Birders from near and far make a special trip to Sky Meadows just to catch a glimpse of these striking birds. Will you be lucky enough to see one? If you do, be sure to note it in the logbook.
