Geocache Description:

Good vantage point of the LA basin and sunsets
Please post a picture of the sunset if you happen to enjoy one while here

This is a usual destination while walking the geo-dogs in the San Rafael Hills.  On clear days, you get a panorama view of the LA basin and a little shot out toward the San Fernando Valley.  One thing you definitely get here is a great view of the sunset (better in winter).  If the  clouds are set up right, about 15 minutes after sunset, you can get to see an array of colors in the sky.  Wait a little longer, and the city lights start filling in the darkening landscape.

While evening is the better time for the views, the cache is hidden to blend, and you will probably want as much light as possible to help find it.  The cache is a camouflaged 3-inch diameter screw-on top container about 4-inches tall.  It is hidden off the beaten path, and there seem to be a lot up here.  Besides muggles, larger wild life also roams the area.  While there is evidence of coyotes, all I have ever seen is deer.

The terrain is rated fairly high for a short walk because it is steep and slick. If you are not careful, you will slip, more so on the way down.  I've walked it in worn-out sneakers, I suggest something with more bite.  A trekking pole might be handy too.

While I would not call this kid friendly, older kids (eight and older?) will probably do fine.  There is a sharp drop off to one side of this knob, but there is no need to get that close to the edge on your way to the top.

While this area is relatively close to neighborhoods, it is still considered a wilderness.  As mentioned, deer and coyotes are in the area, and while I haven't seen any, it is always possible to run into snakes.  Be smart and careful when wandering the area and poking around in the brush.

Congratulations to Carlfan99 for the early morning find (on Dayton 500 race day at that!). Maybe she needs to change her name to Geofan99.
