The Hanriot HD-1 of the "Blue Devil" Willy Coppens

History
Germany had his “Red Baron” but the Belgians had Willy Coppens. Willy Coppens was born on 6 July 1892 in Bosvoorde. In the beginning of the mobilisation, he was drafted with the Grenadiers. At his own request, he enlisted in the new air force. On 9 December 1915 he qualified as a pilot and got license nr 2140. As a young pilot he fought in the airspace above Flanders. Especially the “Drachen”, German reconnaissance balloons, were his targets. By approaching them very fastly and dangerously close, he made these balloons into flaming torches. In a few months time the “Small Flemish Eagle” took down 36 of these balloons. On a dangerous mission on October 14 Coppens got into a crossfire. Out of sheer necessity he had to land in friendly lines. The dogfight made him lose his left leg. After the war, Coppens was granted the title of baron and honorary colonel. To his last name the place-name Houthulst was added, in recognition to his heroic deeds in the airspace above this region.
Your mission
You're gonna make a recognition flight above the frontline. Aim is to find a depot of ammunition by collecting data.
Find transport to the airport at the given coördinates. Go then to the runway at N 50°47.032 E 2°45.364 to take off. Fly about 660 m. in direction 264 ° true north. Take notes during Your flight, especially from the order of the photographs. Take the value mentioned on the picture and fill it in, in the right order to find out what Your next rendez-vous will be. Make a soft landing and now start Your hike to find the rest of the data.

Collect all data on the waypoints to find the 'ammunition depot'.
Afterwards You have the choice : go back to the landingstrip and fly back to Your homebase or march on via N 50°46.MPK E 2°44.PRN to the parking place, first in the direction SSE and after a while inthe direction NE ( nice hiking path, even with vineyards ! ).

Practical info

Historiek
Duitsland had zijn "Rode Baron" wij hadden Willy Coppens. Willy Coppens werd op 6 juli 1892 te Bosvoorde geboren. Bij de aanvang van de mobilisatie was hij bij de Grenadiers ingelijfd. Op zijn eigen verzoek werd hij bij de opkomende luchtvaart ingeschreven. Op 9 december 1915 verkreeg hij het vliegbrevet nummer 2140.
Als jonge piloot vocht hij in het luchtruim boven onze streken. Vooral de “Drachen”, Duitse verkenningsballonnen, waren zijn doelwit. Door ze uiterst snel en gevaarlijk dicht te benaderen, maakte hij brandende toortsen van die ballonnen. In enkele maanden tijd haalde “de kleine Vlaamse Arend” 36 van deze luchtballonnen neer. Tijdens een gevaarlijke opdracht op 14 oktober kwam Coppens in een spervuur terecht. Hierdoor moest hij noodgedwongen een landing maken in de eigen linies. Het luchtgevecht kostte hem zijn linkerbeen.
Na de oorlog kreeg Coppens van Koning Albert I de titels Baron en Ere-kolonel. Aan zijn naam werd het toponiem “Houthulst” toegevoegd als erkenning om zijn heldendaden in het luchtruim boven deze streek.
Uw missie
U gaat een verkenningsvlucht maken boven de frontlijn. Doel is het vinden van een munitieopslagplaats door het verzamelen van gegevens.
Zorg voor transport naar het vliegveld op bovenstaande coördinaat. Begeef u daarna naar de startbaan op N 50°47.032 E 2°45.364 en stijg op. Vlieg 660 m. in de richting 264 ° ware noorden. Neem tijdens uw vlucht nota van de streek waar u overvliegt. Let vooral op de volgorde van de luchtfoto's en noteer in volgorde de waarde die op de foto vermeld staat. De gegevens hebt u nodig voor uw volgende rendez-vous punten. Land rustig op de landingsbaan en ga nu te voet op verkenning.

U hebt ook de keuze : terug naar de landingsbaan om daar op te stijgen richting thuisbasis of via N 50°46.MPK E 2°44.PRN verder wandelen eerst richting ZZO en daarna NO richting parking ( mooi wandelpad, zelfs langs wijngaarden ! ).

Praktisch
Deze cache kan gelopen worden op zaterdag en zondag vanaf 13u30 tot 18u30, zowel 's zomers als 's winters. Bij slecht weer is het evenmin mogelijk om de cache uit te voeren. Bij tonen van je GPS : €4 persoon; kinderen (onder 12 jaar): €3,5 per kind

Allemagne avait son "Baron Rouge", en Belgique on avait Willy Coppens. Willy Coppens est né a Boisfort le 6 Juillet 1892. Au début de la mobilisation , il joignait les Grenadiers . A sa demande , il a été inscrit dans le aviation naissante . Le 9 Décembre 1915, il a obtenu le numéro de licence du pilote 2140 .
En tant que jeune pilote , il a combattu dans le ciel de notre région . Surtout les "Drachen", les ballons de reconnaissance allemands étaient sa cible . En attaquant très rapide et dangereusement proche , il faisait des torches de ces ballons . En quelques mois "le petit aigle flamand" descendait 36 de ces ballons. Au cours d'une mission dangereuse , le 14 Octobre Coppens a été abattu dans un combat de l'air. En conséquence , il a été forcé de faire un atterrissage dans les propres lignes . Le duel lui a coûté sa jambe gauche .
Après la guerre, Coppens a reçu du roi Albert Ier, les titres Baron et colonel honoraire. Le toponyme «"Houthulst" a été ajouté en reconnaissance de ses exploits dans l'espace aérien de cette région.
Votre mission
Vous allez faire un vol de reconnaissance au-dessus de la champ de bataille. L'objectif est de trouver un " dépôt de munitions ' par la collecte de données.
Assurez-vous de transport vers l'aéroport aux coordonnées ci-dessus. Allez ensuite à la piste de décollage à N 50 ° E 2 ° 47 032 45 364. Envolez 660 m dans la direction 264 ° nord. Durant votre vol , prenez note de la région où vous voyagez . Notez la séquence de photos aériennes et notez la valeur indiqué sur la photo dans l'ordre que vous les voyez. Vous avez besoin de ces informations pour vos prochains points de rendez-vous . Atterrisez tranquillement sur la piste d'atterrissage et allez à pied à la découverte.

Ce cache ne peut être trouvé le samedi et le dimanche de 13h30 à 18h30 , à la fois l'été et l'hiver . Par mauvais temps , il n'est pas possible de faire le vol . Prix si montrez votre GPS : € 4,- adultes, € 3,5 enfants
