Government File ZA-02, Field Reports from [Redacted].
January 1, 2014. Our research is progressing well. However, a small outbreak occurred in hampton roads research facility BW-01. Fortunately, there was no news coverage, no public awareness, and the outbreak was quickly contained according to Extermination Procedure 01A-2005.
January 14, 2014. It appears that one infected victim escaped the EP 01A-2005 action. We don't know how. Perhaps the other bodies shielded it from the fire? A memo suggesting a procedural update to EP01A-2005 has been submitted. All we know at this point is that the escaped infected organism is a carrier of the the virus. The public is still unaware.
January 20, 2014. Several attacks have occurred around the Norfolk area. We believe the escaped carrier, now termed C1, is responsible. We are trying to contain the damages, but media is reporting on increased assault rates, horrific injuries, and there are some reports leaking that the government is suppressing information. The individuals responsible for those reports have been dealt with according to EP05B-2003.
January 23, 2014. C1 has been captured and exterminated. Yet several more attacks have been reported. Media coverage cannot be contained. Work is underway to contain the newly infected carriers.
January 25, 2014. State of emergency has been declared. The bridges to and from Norfolk are blocked. Evacuations are in progress.
January 26, 2014. Information on the nature of the outbreak are circulating in news media around the world. Public has panicked. The navy has evacuated many, but tens of thousands still remain. We cannot guarantee infection rates. Decision has been made to quarantine the remaining population.
January 31, 2014. All roads, bridges, and tunnels to and from Norfolk are destroyed. Most sea vessels sunk. The army is controlling all access points. The reports from the city...horrific.
February 10, 2014. Most individuals in Norfolk likely infected. Some pockets of resistance (fortified refugee camps) have according to aerial reports managed to repel the nightly assaults. However, we cannot guarantee infection rates and will not evacuate.
February 19, 2014. No broadcasts have reached us from Norfolk in 3 days. The last refugees must have been infected. The special forces are still patrolling, maintaining strict quarantine. Some individuals attempting escape has been dealt with according to EP 01A-2014 (updated 01A-2005).
February 25, 2014. The city appears dead, yet the infected organisms still roam. Our best estimates put their life expectancy to 60 days (95% confidence interval 53-67 days). This has been deemed too long, and Operation Fire Storm will commence as soon as preparations are complete. It is believed with 99.99% certainty that no higher life forms within the city of Norfolk will survive this operation. I can only pray that nobody remains.
- Zombies roam during the night, but not the day. They shun strong light.
- A zombie can overpower a grown human male in 30 seconds or less.
- Zombies appear to be territorial, and utilize ambush-style hunting.
- Primary noises are grunts, growls, and low roars.
- Zombies are relatively easy to outrun; if encountered without weaponry, try running away from the zombie territory. They will not pursue.
- Find a safe place to spend the night, and travel during day time only

Your Story
You are a survivor of the first recorded zombie infestation outbreak. You hide during the night, and collect food and potentially useful items during the day. You know you can count yourself lucky to have managed so far, but the situation is untenable. Somehow, some way, you must escape from Norfolk! You have noticed an increased activity around the USS Wisconsin battleship harbored in downtown Norfolk. After careful surveying you have determined that an organized band of survivors are attempting to ready the ship and cast off with the very small remaining civilian population of Norfolk. It is your only chance to make it. You must join them, and help them prepare the ship to sail off as quick as possible. You have packed your gear, said your prayers, and decided to make contact with the USS Wisconsin, its crew, and the leader of the pack: The Captain.

How to Play
This Wherigo game features a number of virtual zones, characters, items, and events. You can interact with characters e.g. by talking to them, giving them items, or using items on them. Items can be found (e.g., on the ground) or given to you by other characters. Some characters have missions or tasks for you to complete, others may provide useful information or items when talked to. Events may occur at specific times, or are triggered by your actions in the game or location in real life. If you have never played a cartridge that contains items or characters before, this may seem daunting, but don't worry; you'll get the hang of it real quick. This cartridge may even surprise the more seasoned Wherigo-cacher with some uncommon tricks. Keep the following in mind when playing:
- This is an adventure game. You play a character within a story (see above), so approach this Wherigo cache like you would a computer game.
- This means that you should talk to the virtual characters, attempt to use items, keep an eye on your inventory for things you may want to use, and be careful so that you don't run into trouble (such as being ambushed by a zombie when you are unarmed).
- Small note on the side: Yes, you can, in fact, "die" in this game. When this happens you have to visit a special "Revival Zone" to restart your most recent mission. That means a lot of extra walking and time! So beware of the zombies...
- The cartridge is designed to take place within a defined area around Town Point Park, between the edge of the water (obviously), Boush Street/Waterside Drive, I264, and W Brambleton Ave. Please remain within this area, and there is no need to cross major roads while doing this Wherigo.
- The total game time for this Wherigo is likely around 2-4 hours. There is a lot of walking involved. Make sure your GPS/Phone is fully charged and/or bring extra batteries.
- Please also make sure that the sound is on and turned up on your device. It'll enhance your experience...
Additional Important Information
- Please let us know of any issues you have so that we can correct them and make this the best possible adventure for everyone!
- The starting location is outside of the Nauticus, so head over there to get started. However, there is no need to actually enter the Nauticus or board the Wisconsin to complete the cartridge. Everything takes place on public property.
- We've included some parking coordinates: the Boush St. Garage for pay parking, and street parking on Harbour St. and Brooke Ave (which is a 2-hour limit on weekdays and Saturdays). If needed, there is additional parking available at the Plume St. Garage.
Congratulations to Cameramoose, steve-n-kim, southtexas, VAEagleFan, 4TrailBlazers, and Lacey1961 for being the first survivors to make your escape!
