Geocache Description:

This cache is located at Castle Beagh which is situated on the south side of the River Shannon not far from the main N69 with views up and down river, and northwards across to Shannon Airport. This is a popular spot as it gives wonderful views of the Estuary.

Castle Beagh has had a long and colourful history, being rebuilt around 1260 by the Knight of Glin on what is reputed to be the site of an earlier Viking fort. Later owned by a Cromwellian called Sir Hardress Waller, used as a defensive outpost at the time of the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th Century. Then used as a Coastguard Station between1835 - 1860.  Its adjoining pier was once used as a stop for the Shannon packet steamer, and to facilitate this the road was brought to meet it in 1904. An imposing tower house with a spiral staircase leading to the second floor which can still be used today. There is plenty of parking at the location and can even be a park and grab, but would be a shame not to take in the Castle and the views across the estuary. The Cache is a standard snap box with plenty of swag to start with and a very unique first to find.  Please place back out of site of Muggles as this can be a popular spot in nice weather.

WARNING: these are open ruins which are not maintained and therefore can be dangerous. Please be aware of this and take the utmost care if you are going to look around.

CONGRATULATIONS TO: batinahat & stellapickle for their FTF!
