Atik Valide Camii / Mosque Mystery Cache

Mimar Sinan’ın Edirne Selimiye Camii’nden sonra yaptığı büyük külliyelerden biri olan Valide Külliyesi, Atik Valide Camii diye de anılır.

Osmanlı’nın en güçlü valide sultanlarından II.Selim’in hanımı, III.Murat’ın annesi Venedikli Nurbanu Valide Sultan tarafından  yaptırılan eser, İstanbul’un boyutları açısından en büyük külliyeleri arasında olup adeta sultanın gücünü bir kez daha pekiştirir niteliktedir. Halk arasında Eski Valide ve Valide-i Atik isimleriyle de bilinen külliye, cami, medrese, sıbyan mektebi, darüşşifa, imaret (kervansaray, tabhane) darülhadis – darülkurra, tekke ve hamamdan oluşur.

The Atik Valide Mosque (name translation: Old Mosque of the Sultan's Mother) was one of the most extensive mosque complexes in Istanbul area. The mosque was built for Sultana Nur-Banu, the Venetian-born wife of Selim II and the mother of Murat III. She was the first of all sultans’ mothers that ruled over the Ottoman Empire from the harem. Mimar Sinan completed the mosque in 1583, and it was his last major work.

1577 yılında yapımına başlanan külliye, Nurbanu Valide Sultan’ın öldüğü 1583 yılında ancak tamamlanabilmiş. Nurbanu Sultan’ın kaderi de Osmanlı Sarayı’ndaki pek çok kadından farklı değil  aslında: Venedik’e bağlı Korfu adalarından Paros Beyi’nin kızı Cecilia Venier Baffo; 11 – 12 yaşlarında Barbaros’un adayı işgali sırasında İstanbul’a getirilir. İstanbul’da dönemin en ünlü ticaret merkezi olan Pera’daki köle tacirlerinden birine satılır önce oradan da bir saray görevlisine.

Nurbanu Sultan (ca. 1525 – 7 December 1583) was the wife of Sultan Selim II of the Ottoman Empire, mother of Sultan Murad III, and de facto co-ruler as the Valide Sultan for nine years from 1574 until 1583. She was either a Venetian of noble birth or a Spanish Jew. Her birth name may have been Olivia or Cecilia Venier-Baffo. According to Venetian records, Cecilia or Olivia was presumably the natural daughter of Nicolò Venier, a Lord of Páros, by Violante Baffo. She was the niece of the Doge of Venice, Sebastiano Venier. She was captured when the Turks conquered the Cyclades island of Páros, where she was born, during the 1537 war, abducted from there and taken to the royal harem of Ottoman Prince Selim II in Istanbul, where she was renamed "Afife Nûr-Banû".
