While the Delta Baptist Church building dates from 1880, the Baptists have been around for many years and this was their second church. It's history begins with Rev. Elder Abel Stevens who dressed in leather pants and smock. Carrying his Bible, he rode horseback through the woods ten to fifteen miles, preaching at farmhouses where the settlers had congregated. In 1811, the Elder called a meeting to plan for the erection of a Baptist church. After the walls and roof were finished, they ran out of funds. The Anglicans offered to help finish the church in exchange for joint ownership. In 1864, the Baptists sold their share of the church (present-day St. Paul's) to the Anglicans while they worshipped at Philipsville. Then in 1879, the Delta brethren decided to organize another church in the village of Delta, the one you see standing before you at GZ.
