Small lock-n-lock along a trail in the George Mitchell Nature Preserve.
The George Mitchell Nature Preserve is part of the Montgomery County Spring Creek Greenway, which will connect and protect up to 12,000 acres of forest on both sides of Spring Creek, and is located in the Woodlands’ Village of Creekside Park. The Mitchell Preserve covers nearly 1,700 acres, and opened in 2007. As this cache series was being developed, there were already about 22 geocaches hidden in the eastern part of this preserve in The Woodlands, north and south of Spring Creek.
The latest trails in the preserve/greenway were blazed in February 2014 and happen to be just a hop-skip-and-jump from the new home of Smukke & the GeoPet. These trails will eventually connect up with the earlier George Mitchell Preserve trails, Burroughs Park, and all those other geocaches. However, as of this writing, this relatively short trail is a standalone loop from a residential neighborhood up to and around a pretty lake.
All of the caches in the series are along the trail, mostly fairly close to the trail. As such, please be sure to re-cover the caches so they are not left open to the elements, critters and muggles. Caches further from the trail have been given a slightly elevated level of difficulty.
The length of the full ‘loop’ from Trailhead 1 back to Trailhead 1 is about 2 miles. There are additional ways into and out of the trails, but they can be extremely muddy. Parts of the trail may also be wet and muddy. It may not be possible to complete the trail as a ‘loop’ without at least knee-high boots if it has been raining recently.
