Geocache Description:

A cache hidden near to a piece of public art in Wollescote Park, this combines a bit of local history and the chance to admire some art.

The cache commemorates Prince Rupert of the Rhine, (1619-1682) cousin of Charles I and a Royalist Commander during the English Civil War. He used Wollescote Hall, then owned by Thomas Millward as his headquarters while in the area. In 1645, after the Prince lost out in a fight with Parliamentary forces on Stourbridge Common he had to hide down a well near the hall when making an escape.

The sculpture was commissioned by the Friends of Wollescote Park and designed by Dudley’s borough artist Steve Field. It was carved, in the spring of 2010 from a single piece of sweet chestnut by Graham Jones. The sculpture is almost four metres tall and is surrounded by a decorative fence by local metalworker Robert Foxall Colley.

You don't need to touch the sculpture itself, or even step over the fence to find this cache. You do need to bring your own pen and tweezers. Parking is available close to the cache. The cache is available 24/7 and you should be able to park near here at all times. You may want to pick your times however as with ball courts nearby it can be a bit of a youth hangout spot - and you probably wouldn’t want to be around here in the small hours!
