Geocache Description:

There is a public right of way here. The gate is sometimes locked by the next door farmer but you can get round the side of it.

Park in the layby approaching it from the Douglas side

In this secluded graveyard lie the remains of thousands of Cork dead, victims of the terrible potato famine of 1846-7. A figure of 5000 is sometimes given. The outline of mass burial pits can be seen. During the first 6 months of 1848 some 10,000 were interred in St. Joseph's Cemetry a few miles away, in was obvious that new grounds were needed. The Carr family offered a burial site on their land at the top of the hill which now bears their name. The ground was duly consecrated under the name of All Saints Cemetry but became known as Carr's Hole or The Paupers Graveyard. Some years ago a Cork taxi driver by the name of Jack Sorenson was instrumental in having this 50' , iron latticework cross erected on the sight. He made the cross himself at his home. He saw to its maintenance and illumination until shortly before his death in 1979. Since the millennium celebrations the cross has had new lighting installed and can again be seen from miles around.
